A recent study found that nearly one in eight mothers in England now have a diagnosis of gestational diabetes, a condition that can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. The study also revealed significant disparities in how these conditions are diagnosed and treated, with women from non-white ethnic groups and those living in deprived areas being disproportionately affected. These women were more likely to experience emergency caesarean births, preterm birth, and their babies being born small for gestational age. The COVID-19 pandemic had a limited impact on the number of diagnoses, highlighting the need for urgent action to address these health inequalities and provide better care for high-risk mothers.
