A new study in the UK has found that the government's Winter Fuel Payment scheme may not be targeting the right people to protect vulnerable adults from the dangers of cold homes. Researchers analyzed data from 324 areas in England and found that those living in the most fuel-poor areas had a significantly higher risk of dying from cold-related illnesses, with a 15% increase in mortality risk compared to those in less fuel-poor areas. This suggests that the current eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment scheme may not be doing enough to protect those most at risk, and that the government should consider using fuel poverty metrics to target its support more effectively.
